Binocular specifications are a string of numbers: 8×42, 10×50, 8×25. The first number is magnification (8× = object appears 8× closer). The second is objective lens diameter in millimeters (42mm = the front lens is 42mm wide). These two numbers compute three optical properties that determine whether you can see a moose at dusk, a hawk against the sky, or a campsite marker three ridges away. Here is the physics.

The 8× magnification is the maximum a typical person can hold steady without a tripod—at 10×, natural hand tremor (roughly 0.5-1° of angular movement) amplifies to visible image shake. The 42mm objective collects sufficient light for dawn/dusk wildlife viewing while keeping the binoculars under 26 oz—light enough for a neck strap on a 5-mile day hike. Exit pupil 4.2mm. Twilight factor 20.5. Same light gathering as 8×42 but spreads it across a larger image—subjectively dimmer. The 10× magnification is marginally better for long-distance wildlife but significantly harder to hold steady. A 10× binocular on a 2-mile ridge-to-ridge wildlife search will cause eye fatigue within 10 minutes. Exit pupil 3.1mm (8×25). Twilight factor 14.1. Weight 8-12 oz. The tiny objective lens physically cannot collect enough light for dusk performance. At dawn, an 8×25 is a daytime-only tool. However, it fits in a cargo pocket and weighs half a pound. The Nikon Trailblazer 8×25 ($90, 9.5 oz) is the best compact binocular below $100: Bak4 prism glass (barium crown glass—the higher-index prism material that transmits more light than BK7), rubber-coated, waterproof. Roof prism (straight-barrel binoculars) is compact, expensive to manufacture to high optical quality, and preferred for camping because it fits in a cargo pocket. Porro prism (traditional offset-barrel with the classic "dogleg" shape) provides slightly better 3D depth perception due to wider objective lens separation and costs half as much for equivalent optical quality—but is bulkier. For backpacking: roof prism. For car camping where pack size does not matter: Porro prism.
