Bear spray is effective in 92% of close encounters according to a 2008 study (Smith et al., Journal of Wildlife Management) that analyzed 72 bear-human conflicts. The spray deploys a cone-shaped cloud (not a stream like pepper spray for humans—a cloud creates a barrier the bear must walk through). Spray when the bear is 30-40 feet away—close enough that the cloud reaches the bear, far enough that the bear has time to register the irritant and change course. Spray in 2-second bursts, aiming slightly downward toward the bear's face. If the bear charges, spray continuously. Replace the canister every 4 years (expiration date on can)—the propellant loses pressure and the spray distance drops below effective range.
A fed bear is a dead bear—bears that associate humans with food are relocated or euthanized by wildlife management. In grizzly country: store ALL food, trash, toiletries, and anything with a scent in a bear canister (Garcia Backpacker's Cache, $80, 2.7 lbs, required in Yosemite and Olympic National Parks) or a bear bag hung 12 feet above ground on a branch 6 feet from the trunk. In black bear country with established campgrounds: the provided bear locker is sufficient. Cooking 100 yards from the tent, storing food in the locker, and never bringing snacks into the tent covers 95% of bear-risk reduction. Read our cooler guide for bear-resistant cooler options.
